چکیده

Scientists have been surprised by their find ings when they attempt to link intellectual ability among people of normal intelligence to [he number of neurons in [he brain. Contrary to popular belief, there is no observable correlation between the number of neurons and one's intelligence or ability. Yet it is remarkable that most of the idiopathic cases of mental retardation are associated with smaller head size as well as smaller brain size compared to ageand sex-matched normal subjects. It is likely that some of these cases of idiopathic mental retardation arise through disturbances in the birth of neurons and their subsequent differentiation and migration. However, it is also important to consider not only [he total number of neurons that are born but also how they are connecred and [he ability of these neurons to communicate with each other and process information through neural networks. In previous columns, we reviewed [he birth of neurons and their migration to their final cortical destinations. A later marurational event is [he development of interneuronal synaptic connections. In the final stage of development, large groups of neurons are eliminated by programmed cell death. Growth factors have been impl icated in all of these phases . In this column, we discuss how growth factors mediate these effects. Certain growth factors have been shown to increase [he number of progenitors if added to cells in tissue culture.

The enhancing effect of electromagnetic field on the expression of Oligodendrocyte transcription factor 1 and 2 (Olig1/2) in the mice cerebral cortex

Olig1 and Olig2, two transcription factors, play regulatory function in the differentiation and specification of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs). In this study the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on total protein concentration ( TPC ) and Olig1 and Olig2 expression in the cerebral cortex of mouse was examined. Twenty-one Balb/c mice were separated into three groups: control, EMF...

Laminar Organization of Cerebral Cortex in Transforming Growth Factor Beta Mutant Mice

Transforming growth factor betas (TGF?s) are one of the most widespread and versatile cytokines. The three mammalian TGF? isoforms, ?1, ?2, and ?3, and their receptors regulate proliferation of neuronal precursors as well as survival and differentiation in neurons of developing and adult nervous system. Functions of TGF?s has a wide spectrum ranging from regulating cell proliferation and differ...

PREPARATION OF HIGHLY PURIFIED SOLVENTDETERGENT COA GULATION FACTOR VII AND FACTOR IX CONCENTRATES FROM PROTHROMBIN COMPLEX (PPSB)

In this study, anion-exchange chromatography was used to purify factor VII and factor IX from prothrombin complex (PPSB), which contains coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X. For this purpose, DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B gel , Pharmacia column XK-26 , high flow rate and two stepwise gradients with phosphate citrate buffer were used. The yield of the two lyophylized products, factor VII and factor...

Preparation of factor VII concentrate using CNBr-activated

Background: Factor VII concentrates are used in patients with congenital or acquired factor VII deficiency or treatment of hemophilia patients with inhibitors. In this research, immunoaffinity chromatography was used to purify factor VII from prothrombin complex (Prothrombin-Proconvertin-Stuart Factor-Antihemophilic Factor B or PPSB) which contains coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X. The a...

The importance of cerebrospinal fluid in cerebral cortical development

In this review the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in mammalian cerebral cortex development has been highlighted. Many studies have focused on the potential role of the CSF in the developmental process. In particular, the cerebral cortex develops from the germinal epithelium adjacent to the CSF. CSF contains proteins, growth factors and other neurotrophic factors which are important for neura...
